Choline Chloride 60%, 75% and 98% Compared

Choline chloride (CAS 67-48-1, HS 292310) is the standard way to add choline to animal feed, where it supports fat metabolism in the liver and prevents perosis in poultry. All three grades contain the same active substance. The percentage tells you how much of the product is choline chloride and what the rest is: corn-cob carrier, water, or almost nothing.

Why the 60% grade dominates feed

Pure choline chloride absorbs moisture quickly and cakes. Spraying it onto a ground corn-cob carrier fixes that: the 60% product flows through mixers and micro-dosers without bridging, and the carrier adds nothing harmful to a ration. For a feed mill running dry premix lines, 60% is the default. Typical inclusion is 0.5-2 kg per tonne of complete feed, depending on species and the choline already present in the raw materials. When liquid makes sense

Large mills with liquid dosing, and producers of liquid supplements or molasses blocks, prefer the 75% solution because it pumps and meters precisely without dust. It is also sold into oilfield drilling fluids as a shale inhibitor, a market with different specifications, so state the intended use when requesting a quotation. When to pay for 98%

The 98% powder is specified where the 40% carrier in the standard grade is a problem: premixes already at their bulk limit, pet-food formulations, pharmaceutical and human-nutrition uses, and plant nutrition as a foliar additive. It costs more per kilogram but delivers 1.6 times the choline of the 60% grade, so compare quotations on choline content, not on product weight. Keep bags sealed and use opened bags quickly. Compare on active content

• 1 tonne of 60% grade delivers 600 kg of choline chloride.
• 1 tonne of 75% liquid delivers 750 kg.
• 1 tonne of 98% powder delivers 980 kg.

Divide each price by the delivered kilograms before comparing suppliers, and add the handling cost of the format your line actually runs. The cheapest grade on paper is rarely the cheapest in the mixer.

For every lot: a certificate of analysis with assay, moisture, trimethylamine and heavy metals; for feed use, confirmation of feed-grade status and, if required in your market, GMP+ or FAMI-QS certification of the manufacturer.
